Iowa Flags to Fly at Half-Staff for Air Force Major Killed in B-52 Crash
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all U.S. and Iowa flags to be flown at half-staff statewide from July 10 through July 17 to honor U.S. Air Force Major Brad Hovey, an Iowa native who was killed in a B-52 bomber crash during a test mission in California.
Hovey, 35, was one of eight service members aboard a B-52H Stratofortress that crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base on June 15. The aircraft was conducting a routine development test flight tied to modernization efforts for the aging bomber fleet when it went down, killing everyone on board.
In a statement, Reynolds said: “Major Brad Hovey lived and served with honor and distinction. As a state, we grieve his loss together, and we stand united in our support of his family.”
The weeklong flag order reflects both the scale of the loss and the deep impact on Iowa communities preparing for his funeral. Hovey, a father and experienced bomber pilot, had logged more than 200 combat flight hours and multiple deployments during his Air Force career.
Military officials have said the crash remains under investigation, with early assessments confirming it occurred moments after takeoff. The B-52 is a backbone of America’s strategic bomber fleet, and the crash has raised questions about the safety of ongoing modernization efforts.
Why This Matters for Iowans
Half-staff flag orders are a routine part of U.S. civic life, but the concentration of multiple directives across states is less common. Under the U.S. Flag Code, governors can order flags lowered within their state to honor individuals who have died in service or held significant public roles. This week, Iowa joins Ohio in marking losses across law enforcement, military service, and public leadership.
For Iowans, the order is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in uniform. Hovey’s family, friends, and fellow service members are in the thoughts of the entire state.
How to Observe the Half-Staff Period
All government buildings, schools, and public institutions in Iowa are required to lower flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset each day through July 17. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as a sign of respect. Flags should be raised to full-staff at sunset each day, then lowered again at sunrise the following morning.
Funeral arrangements for Major Hovey have not yet been publicly announced, but local media reports indicate services are expected in his hometown in the coming days.
