Iowa Distance Runner Matt Lorenz Dominates Fifth Season 8K for 2026 Victory

Cedar Rapids assistant coach Matt Lorenz reclaimed his throne at the Fifth Season 8K on July 4, winning the iconic Iowa road race by 42 seconds and signaling a strong return to form for the Runablaze Iowa athlete. The 27-year-old finished the 4.97-mile course in 24 minutes, 26 seconds, after a lightning delay, to beat former Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Wartburg College runner Jacob Green, 24.
Lorenz had won the event in 2022 and 2023 before finishing eighth in 2024 and third in 2025. This year, he left no doubt, building on an impressive 2026 road racing season that includes victories at the inaugural Cedar Rapids Marathon (2:30:55 on June 7) and the Marion Arts Festival Half Marathon (1:08:49 on May 16).
How Did Other Iowa Runners Perform at the Fifth Season 8K?
The 41st running of the Fifth Season 8K traditionally features one of the fastest fields in Iowa on the Fourth of July. Former Linn-Mar and Iowa State runner Greyson Dolezal, 29, took third in 25:38. Wartburg sophomore-to-be Ethan Boston, a Linn-Mar grad, finished fourth in 26:13, tying with recent Linn-Mar grad Ethan Cheney, 18, who also ran 26:13 for fifth.
Noah Gregoire, a former Liberty High prep now at Mount Mercy, was sixth in 26:21. Aidan Decker, another Liberty product entering his junior season at Wartburg, finished seventh in 26:22. Adam Gray, a recent Kennedy grad, ran 26:23 for eighth. Carter Mulford, a Wartburg sophomore-to-be from Prairie, was ninth in 26:28, and junior teammate Cooper Cook, a Marion grad, rounded out the top 10 in 26:31.
Former Runablaze athlete Leif Klarqvist, 23, now based in Minnesota, placed 11th in 26:38.
Who Won the Masters Division at the Fifth Season 8K?
Ean Caskey, 44, the Iowa all-time record holder for men 40-49 in the 8K, was the top masters finisher, placing 12th overall in 26:39. The former Cornell College star beat Running Wild Elite's Nathan Hopp, 43, of Cedar Rapids by 1:10 for the masters title. Hopp is No. 2 all-time in Iowa masters history for the distance at 25:36.
Lucy Conroy Wins Women's Fifth Season 8K Title
Former Northern Iowa and Mount Vernon runner Lucy Conroy, 29, won her first Fifth Season title by topping a strong women's field. Conroy ran 29:28, a 5:56 pace, to edge Fitness Sports Distance Project runner Gabby Skopec, 27, who finished in 29:43. Current Northern Iowa cross country coach Alexina Teubel, 33, a former Mount Vernon/Lisbon and Panther great, took third in 29:48.
FSDP team member Deanna Newhouse, 27, an ex-Mount Mercy runner, placed fourth in 30:03. Runablaze's Elaina Biechler, 40, an ex-Coe College great, was the top masters runner and fifth overall in 31:28, moving her to No. 6 in Iowa masters history.
What Happened in the Fifth Season 5K?
Ean Caskey's 17-year-old son, Chasen, won the 5K in 16:17. The Mount Vernon senior-to-be topped Jens Strand, 16, by six seconds. Isaac Morris, 20, a Benton Community grad and Cornell College junior, was third in 16:29. The women's winner was former Lisbon runner Lourdes Mason, 21, in 19:58, winning by 1:05.
Shelby Houlihan Shines at Prefontaine Classic
Sixteen-time Iowa state champion and 2016 Olympian Shelby Houlihan, 33, finished third overall in the women's 2 mile at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on July 4. The Sioux City East grad ran 9:21.42 to finish as the top American. Karissa Schweizer, a two-time Olympian from Dowling Catholic, settled for sixth in 9:22.79.
The previous day, former Iowa State All-American Festus Lagat of Kenya placed fifth in the 1 mile in 3:51.44.
Iowa Runners Excel at Peachtree Road Race 10K
Wesley Kiptoo, the 2021 NCAA indoor 5,000 champion for Iowa State, claimed 12th in the men's professional field at the Peachtree Road Race 10K in Atlanta, running 28:40. Ryan Ford, a former Iowa State teammate now based in Boulder, Colorado, was 16th in 29:20. Former Valley and Iowa runner Ben Anderson, now in Fort Collins, Colorado, placed 36th in 32:34.
Tyler Lance Wins Clear Lake Freedom 5K
Runablaze's Tyler Lance of Algona rolled to victory at the Clear Lake Freedom 5K on July 4, running 15:15 to top Gilbert senior-to-be Logan Bleich by 49 seconds. Riley Witt, an All-American at Northwest Missouri State from St. Ansgar, was third. The women's champion was former Boone High and Hansons-Brooks professional Danna Herrick of Norwalk, who ran 18:07 to edge Kiki (Connell) Witt by 8 seconds.
Joe Langridge Tops Firecracker Run 5K in Moline
Running Wild Elite's Joe Langridge, 23, won the Firecracker Run 5K in Moline, Illinois, on July 4 in 15:07, tying for the No. 5 mark in team history. Devin Allbaugh, the men's team coordinator and former Pleasant Valley prep, secured second in 15:11. Runablaze's Phil Young, 40, of Davenport was the top masters runner in fourth in 15:40.
In the 10K, Zach Gray, 30, of Davenport took runner-up in 35:35, 1:13 behind winner Matt Jackson, 32, of East Moline, Illinois.
